Beautiful House
BackHiša Krasna in Lokva, a name that was considered a synonym for quality among connoisseurs of good food and boutique experiences, closed its doors forever at the end of 2023. This news surprised many, as it operated as an extremely respected restaurant and boutique hotel that successfully combined Karst tradition with a modern approach. This is not a story of failure, but rather the closing of a chapter and a personal shift for the owners, Dajana and Boris Škibin, who decided to take on new life challenges. However, the legacy of Hiša Krasna remains an important part of the Slovenian gastronomic landscape, worthy of closer examination.
Vision and ambience of a karst homestead
The Krasna House was not just a place to eat and stay; it was the realization of the owners' dream, who renovated an old Karst homestead with great respect for tradition into a house of hospitality. As they themselves say, the purchase and renovation of the homestead in Lokva was a project in which they invested their vision of intertwining Istria, where Dajana comes from, and the Karst, Boris' homeland. This duality was reflected in every pore of their work, from the interior design to the menu . Guests often praised the exceptional ambiance, which combined the rustic charm of stone walls with elegance and comfort. In the summer, the idyllic courtyard under the mulberry tree came to life, while in the winter the interior, reminiscent of a traditional Karst house, offered warmth. This feeling of homeliness and exclusivity was one of the key pillars of their success.
Culinary philosophy and international recognition
The heart of Hiša Krasna was undoubtedly its cuisine. Their catering offer was based on the philosophy of slow food , with a deep respect for local ingredients . Chef Aleš Širca created dishes that were a modern interpretation of the traditional flavors of the Karst and Istria. The emphasis was on seasonal, fresh and often organically grown ingredients, some even coming from the home garden. This dedication to quality did not go unnoticed. Hiša Krasna was included in the Michelin guide several times, where it earned the "Michelin Plate" award and later the "Michelin Recommendation", which put it on the international culinary map. Guests were delighted with the thoughtful tasting menus , which offered from five to eight courses and represented a true culinary experience . Dishes such as marinated trout, venison and lamb, which were carefully paired with a rich selection of wines , stood out in particular. The wine list contained more than 100 labels, with an emphasis on wines from the Karst, Istria, the Vipava Valley, and the Brda Mountains.
Praise and criticism: Two sides of experience
With a rating of 4.7 based on over 200 reviews, it is clear that the vast majority of guests left Hiša Krasno with extremely positive impressions. Many highlighted the excellent and friendly service that made them feel at home. The staff was described as professional and helpful, which added the finishing touch to the entire experience. The hotel part of the offer also garnered praise; guests mentioned the beautiful and clean rooms and the unforgettable homemade breakfast, which was a feast for the eyes and taste buds. Special omelettes, homemade jams and local delicacies were the perfect start to the day.
Despite the many accolades, it is also right to look at the other side. Like any restaurant , Hiša Krasna has faced criticism from time to time. Of particular note is the experience of a guest during the popular Restaurant Week event, who was diametrically opposed to most. She complained about bland and under-salted food, very small portions, and an error in charging for wine. Such experiences, while apparently rare, point to the potential challenges that caterers face during events with large crowds, when the kitchen and staff are under great pressure. Another critic also mentioned that the portions for the four-course meal (€55) were too small compared to some other renowned restaurants and that the fixed menu without options did not suit everyone. These criticisms offer a balanced view and are an important part of the whole story, as they show that haute cuisine does not always satisfy all tastes and expectations.
The Legacy of the House of Krasna
Although Hiša Krasna no longer welcomes guests, its influence on Karst and Slovenian cuisine remains. It was an exemplary example of how heritage can be respected and at the same time upgraded with modern approaches. The owners proved that with vision, hard work and genuine hospitality it is possible to create a destination that attracts both domestic and foreign guests. Their decision to close, while business was at its peak, is a testament to a personal search for new paths, not a business failure. Hiša Krasna will be remembered as a place where excellent food , top-quality wines and the warmth of human contact met, and as proof that something wonderful can really be experienced in the Karst.
