Located on the ground floor of the magnificent, Renaissance Villa Vipolže, Kruh in Vino Restaurant is one of the key culinary hotspots in Goriška Brda. Its name, simple and eloquent, announces a focus on the fundamentals of hospitality, but behind this simplicity lies a concept conceived and led by one of Slovenia's most prominent chefs, Tomaž Kavčič. This connection with haute cuisine and Zemona Manor already sets high expectations, which the restaurant largely meets, but at the same time leaves room for a few important observations that potential guests should take into account.

Concept and culinary offer

The basic idea behind Kruh in Vino is to offer a bistro version of a fine dining experience that is more relaxed and accessible than Kavčič's parent restaurant, Pri Lojzetu. The emphasis is on exceptional, mostly local ingredients , prepared in a way that preserves their authenticity, but with an innovative twist. The menu doesn't try to compete with Zemon; instead, it offers dishes that are thoughtful, yet seemingly simple. Guests can expect everything from excellent gnocchi, crostini to innovative gogač (a type of bread dough that rises for 30 hours and is richly layered with local produce and meats). These are dishes designed as "small snacks to accompany great wines," emphasizing the symbiosis between food and drink that is especially important in the heart of the Brda Mountains.

Most guest reviews confirm the exceptional quality of the food. They highlight the excellent flavors, freshness of the ingredients and a pleasant surprise with every bite. They especially praise the participation in events such as Restaurant Week, where the team shows off their creativity and high level of preparation. The ambiance also receives many compliments; it is described as pleasant, calm, with carefully selected music that complements the historical charm of Vila Vipolže. The modernly furnished interior beautifully intertwines with Renaissance architecture, creating a unique and elegant atmosphere.

Service and wine pairing

The service is one of the most strongly highlighted positive elements. The staff is regularly described as extremely friendly, professional and helpful. Guests appreciate that the waiters take the time to explain individual dishes, which elevates the entire experience to a higher level. This professionalism and at the same time homeliness are key to the success of the concept set by Kavčič. Of course, the restaurant's name also promises an exceptional wine selection. The wine list is one of the most extensive in the region, perhaps even in Slovenia, with more than 600 labels. The offer includes all the important names from the Brda region, as well as a wide selection of wines from other Slovenian and foreign regions. The option to order numerous top-quality wines by the glass is a great advantage, allowing guests to explore the rich oenological offer.

Points requiring attention

Despite the mostly excellent reviews, there are also critical views that cannot be ignored. The most specific negative experience concerns the discrepancy between the description of the dish on the menu and the actual service. One of the guests ordered "duck confit with seasonal vegetables", but received, according to him, an ordinary roast duck leg with pickled peppers. Although he praised the friendliness of the staff and the atmosphere, the good food that he expected was a disappointment for him. Such an example points to the possible occasional inconsistency in execution or a communication noise between the kitchen and the guest's expectations. The concept of "refined simplicity" can be a double-edged sword; what is a superb, ingredient-focused dish for one person may be too simple for another.

Limited working hours and the future

The biggest practical obstacle for visitors is undoubtedly the extremely limited opening hours. The restaurant is only open on weekends – Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. This means that a spontaneous visit during the week is impossible, which requires careful planning, especially for guests who are not from the immediate area. Advance booking is essential. In addition, it is important to note that a significant change has occurred at the end of 2025. Tomaž Kavčič has confirmed that he is leaving Vila Vipolže after nine years and that he will not apply for a new tender for the lease of catering premises. This raises the question of the future of the restaurant and its concept under new management. Although the legacy is strong, the new tenants will have to prove that they can maintain or upgrade the high standards set.

Bread and Wine at Villa Vipolže undoubtedly offered an exceptional culinary experience, based on top-quality ingredients, an exceptional wine list, professional service and the unique ambience of a Renaissance villa. It represented an opportunity to taste the philosophy of a top chef in a more relaxed format and at reasonable prices. However, potential guests had to be aware of the limited opening hours and be aware that the simple nature of the dishes might not meet all expectations. With the departure of Tomaž Kavčič, a new chapter begins, so it is advisable to check the current situation and offer before setting off to the heart of the Goriška Brda.
