The Raj Inn in Puštal near Škofja Loka was for many years synonymous with summer refreshment and relaxation by the Sora River. Its location was undoubtedly its greatest asset – situated right next to a natural swimming pool, under the canopy of trees, with a view of the river and the old town of Škofja Loka, it was an almost idyllic place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, today this once popular spot is permanently closed, and its story serves as a reminder that an exceptional location is not always enough for long-term success.

The irresistible appeal of the location

Few inns can boast such a fortunate location. Gostilna Raj offered visitors more than just a drink or lunch ; it offered a complete experience. People came here for a coffee after a walk, for ice cream with the children, or for a cold beer after swimming in the Sora. The pleasant ambiance , created by the natural shade and the sound of the river, was perfect. Because of this, many overlooked some of the shortcomings and liked to return. The potential of the establishment was, as many former guests have emphasized, simply exceptional. It was not just a stopover, but a destination in itself, a place that invited people to socialize and enjoy nature.

Two sides of the hospitality experience

Despite the idyllic scenery, the culinary experience at Gostilna Raj was not always flawless. Guest opinions were often divided and painted a picture of a place with two faces. On the one hand, there were satisfied visitors who praised the friendly staff, good coffee and later, when the kitchen was also operational, a solid food offer. Pizzas, čevapčiči and fish dishes were added to the menu, which expanded the circle of guests. Positive reviews often emphasized that this is "the best location in Škofja Loka", where you can eat and drink well in a relaxed atmosphere.

However, there were also critical voices, and they were not few. The most frequent and pressing problem highlighted was cleanliness. Several guests reported litter under the tables and in the surrounding area – from straws to bills and plastic spoons. This mess greatly spoiled the image of the otherwise beautiful natural environment and discouraged many from visiting again. In addition, some mentioned poor maintenance, such as tables that were literally falling apart, which gave the impression of neglect. The service was also occasionally slow, and according to some, the offer was only average and did not reach the potential promised by the location.

Reasons for closure: More than just poor cleanliness

The story of the closure of Gostilna Raj is more complex than it might seem at first glance. Although operational problems were obvious, the main reason for the end of business was the legal status of the facility. According to media reports, the restaurant was built illegally, without the appropriate permits. The inspection found that it was illegal construction back in 2015. The situation was further complicated by the August floods, which damaged the electrical infrastructure and showed that the facility in a flood-prone area was also dangerous.

The owner explained that for twelve years he had operated on the basis of an agreement with the municipality, which provided him with electricity in exchange for the use of his land for parking and sanitary facilities for bathers. When this agreement ended and the municipality expressed its intention to buy the land for flood protection measures, the operation of the establishment became impossible. Thus, the story of the "paradise" by the Sora ended not only because of the garbage on the ground, but also because of deeper, legal and infrastructural problems.

The legacy and future of space

The Raj Inn remains in the memory of many Loč residents as a place with enormous, but perhaps never fully exploited, potential. Its example clearly shows that a prime location needs solid foundations – both literally, in the form of a legal and safe facility, and figuratively, with consistent quality of service, cleanliness and a good offer. The municipality is striving to revive a legal and safe restaurant at this location after flood protection measures are implemented. Until then, the popular bathing resort in Puštal will be left without its catering heart, and visitors will only be able to relive memories of summers spent in the (sometimes imperfect) paradise by the Sora.
