Guesthouse Iški Vintgar
BackThe Iški Vintgar Inn, located in the heart of a natural gem right next to the Iška River, represents a point where the love of nature and the desire for good homemade food meet. The location itself promises a unique experience; the babbling of the river, the shade of the trees and the feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city are the main assets that attract hikers, cyclists, families and anyone who wants a break in nature. After renovation in 2021, the inn boasts a refreshed image and the goal of combining traditional Slovenian cuisine with modern touches. However, guest experiences paint a complex picture, full of both bright spots and warnings that should be considered before visiting.
Culinary offer: Between praise and criticism
The heart of any restaurant is its cuisine, and at Gostišče Iški Vintgar it is full of contrasts. On the one hand, the menu promises authentic flavors such as venison goulash, veal liver, trout, roasts, black pudding and a variety of homemade štruklji. Positive reviews often highlight individual dishes that left a great impression. Among them, the mushroom soup stands out, which guests describe as "excellent" and reasonably priced considering the generous portion. The apple strudel also receives praise, which shows that the kitchen has mastered the preparation of certain classics. Some visitors are enthusiastic about the large portions and the offer adapted to children, which is a great advantage for families who are frequent visitors to the gorge.
On the other hand, there are many criticisms that point to a significant inconsistency in quality. Disappointment was expressed with dishes such as the rice, which one guest described as "below average", but at an above average price of €16.50. The same applies to the walnut štruklji, which one guest found to be too sweet, too fatty and perhaps even undercooked. These experiences show that visiting this restaurant can be risky, as the quality clearly fluctuates from dish to dish and perhaps even from day to day.
Prices : Apple of Discord
The biggest and most consistent complaint that can be found in visitors' opinions is undoubtedly the high prices . Many agree that the price list does not correspond to the ambience, which is reminiscent of a mountain hut or a simple country inn. Guests expressed shock at the bills; the case where two guests paid €38 for two walnut štruklji and two lemonades is telling. Another couple paid more than €90 for a quick snack that included ješprenj and beef in salad. Such prices would be expected in top restaurants in the center of Ljubljana, but not in an environment where there are no tablecloths on the tables and the toilets are outside the building. This discrepancy between the expectations created by the location and the reality of the prices is for many the biggest minus and the reason why they will not return there again.
Service and ambiance: Two sides of the coin
The location is undoubtedly idyllic. Enjoying lunch with the sound of the river is an experience that is hard to beat. This is what Gostišče Iški Vintgar sells and what convinces many. However, the whole experience is also shaped by the service , which, like the food, has received mixed reviews.
- Positive experiences: Some guests described the staff as "very friendly" and quick, even during busy times. They emphasize that they were served well and that the staff maintained a professional attitude despite the heat and pressure.
- Negative experiences: Others have a completely different story. They mention desperately slow service, where they had to wait up to ten minutes for their order and end up placing it right at the bar. There are even complaints about rudeness and inappropriate behavior from the younger staff. An additional stain on the reputation is left by comments about cleanliness, such as mentioning dirty trays and cups, which casts a bad light on the entire establishment.
So what to expect?
The Iški Vintgar Inn is a place of extremes. On the one hand, it offers a priceless natural environment, which is the perfect backdrop for relaxation and escape from everyday life. On the other hand, it faces serious challenges in terms of price-quality ratio, consistency of culinary offerings and professionalism of the staff. A potential guest must decide what is more important to him.
If your main goal is to enjoy nature and you are not overly price-sensitive, a visit can be pleasant – perhaps with a cup of coffee, a praised mushroom soup or a piece of strudel. It can be the perfect end to a trip through the Iški Vintgar gorge. However, if you are looking for a reliable and top-notch culinary experience at a fair price, there is a high probability that you will be disappointed. So a visit is a compromise between a unique ambiance and the risk of a mediocre or even bad experience with food and service, for which you will pay much more than you might have expected.
