At Verje 9 in Medvode, there is a location that is remembered by many Slovenians not as just another rural building, but as the setting for one of the most famous culinary reality shows in our country. Namely, this is where Gostilna pri šefu stood, a project that was created under the auspices of the television show "Gostilna išče šefa". Despite the glare of television cameras and media recognition, this restaurant is now permanently closed, and its story serves as an eloquent example of the differences between television fame and the harsh reality in the world of hospitality .

Climbing under the spotlight

The beginnings of Gostilna pri šefu were spectacular. It was designed as the central element of a television show, where cooking contestants, led by renowned chef Bine Volčič, competed for the main prize: a five-year lease and management of this very restaurant , built and equipped for the needs of the show. The concept itself was innovative and attractive for the Slovenian space. Viewers not only watched the cooking, but also had the opportunity to visit the scene of the action and taste the dishes that were being created before their eyes. The kitchen, which was functionally designed by Volčič himself, was open-plan, which allowed guests a direct view of the action and food preparation, making their culinary experience all the more direct and interesting.

During the show's run, the restaurant was extremely popular. Reserving a table was practically mission impossible, the parking lot was always full, and public interest was at its peak. People weren't just coming for lunch or dinner ; they were coming for a slice of television magic, to see the contestants live and taste the food that was the talk of Slovenia. This media support was key to its initial success and created an image of one of the most desirable culinary destinations in the country.

Sobering up after the show

After the end of the first season, the restaurant was taken over by the winner Andrej Murko, as promised. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Gostilna pri šefu – a transition from a television studio to a real business environment. However, it turned out that the conditions for operating were anything but easy. According to media reports, the monthly rent for the facility was a staggering 4,500 euros, which represented a huge financial burden. Without the constant support of cameras, media attention and stories generated by the show, maintaining guest interest became much more difficult. The reality of running a restaurant requires more than just good cooking; it requires cost management, marketing, staff management and ensuring consistent quality, which is extremely demanding.

The epilogue was swift and painful. Just six months after the takeover, Andrej Murko closed the doors of the inn at the Medvode location and moved his business elsewhere. This move clearly showed that the business model, based on television fame, was unsustainable in the long term, at least under such demanding financial conditions. The facility was soon offered for sale for a price of 860,000 euros, but there were no serious buyers. Experts cited the overly high price and the location, which without media support was not attractive enough to justify such an investment.

Mixed responses and reviews from guests

Although the restaurant was praised in the media, the experiences of guests who actually visited it were quite different, as is also shown by the rare but eloquent online reviews. On the one hand, we find enthusiastic comments from visitors praising the food and the entire experience. One online post from the time mentions that the main course was "wonderful", that guests could not complain about the size of the portions and that the price for six courses was more than reasonable. This guest believed that most of the criticism was due to Slovenian "favšija" and a lack of understanding of modern cuisine. Even the five-star rating, although without a detailed comment, indicates that some guests left satisfied.

On the other hand, there is an extremely harsh and devastating criticism that casts a dark shadow on the operation of the restaurant. An eleven-year-old post by one of the users was merciless and focused on the worst possible offense in the hospitality industry – poor hygiene. The user wrote: "cigarette in hand, finger in nose, nail biting when they come back to the kitchen and no one shows up to wash their hands, everyone just goes to prepare". Such an accusation is catastrophic for any restaurant . Hygiene standards are the foundation of trust between the guest and the provider, and the mere suspicion of such behavior can permanently destroy the reputation. Considering that it was a nationally famous restaurant that is supposed to promote top-notch cuisine, such an assessment of the restaurant is all the more shocking and damaging.

Legacy and the end of the story

The story of Gostilna pri šefu is a story of glamour and misery. It is an example of how powerful the influence of the media can be in creating a culinary destination, but it also reminds us that the foundations of a successful hospitality industry lie elsewhere. Without a solid business model, a reasonable cost structure and, above all, an uncompromising commitment to quality and hygiene, even the greatest glory quickly fades. The Medvode location was left alone after the inglorious end of the television story. Although another catering company, YINGKE, gostinstvo doo, is now registered at the same address, the once famous inn has permanently closed its doors. For potential customers looking for home-cooked food or a simple place to have lunch in the Medvode area, Gostilna pri šefu is just a memory of a television experiment that did not work out in the real world.
