Boat Laho Portorož
BackThe Laho ship, which once proudly sailed from the port of Portorož, is no longer in operation today and remains only a part of the rich history and memories of the Slovenian coast. It was not just a restaurant ; it was a complete experience that combined a love of the sea, excellent cuisine and unforgettable views. Built in 1903 in the Netherlands, this historic ship survived for more than a century and in recent decades became an icon of coastal tourism before setting sail on its final journey to be scrapped at the end of 2025. Nevertheless, its spirit and the memories it created live on.
A Unique Concept of a Restaurant by the Sea
The concept offered by the Laho Ship was simple, yet ingenious: it offered guests not just a meal, but a culinary experience while sailing along the picturesque Slovenian coast. While other restaurants offered a view of the sea, Laho took guests directly to it. This combination of panoramic driving and gastronomy attracted families with children, romantic couples, as well as private parties who wanted to celebrate in a truly special atmosphere. The ship was spacious enough to accommodate up to 120 passengers on board, making it ideal for larger events such as weddings or business meetings.
Atmosphere and Vessel Characteristics
The Laho was an impressive vessel, 37 meters long, radiating historical charm. Guests were accommodated on two levels. The upper deck was an open terrace, offering unobstructed views of Piran, Izola, Koper and the open sea, while the lower part resembled a classic restaurant with a comfortable lounge, bar and modernly equipped kitchen. This arrangement made it possible to enjoy the sun and sea breeze or retreat to the shelter of the lounge in case of bad weather. Of course, there were also toilets on board, which ensured complete comfort during the several-hour excursion. According to guests, the crew, which consisted of the captain, sailor, chef and waiters, was always extremely friendly, helpful and "with their hearts in the matter", which significantly contributed to the positive experience.
Gastronomic Offer in Valovi
The core of the offer was, of course, the food, which was prepared fresh, directly on the ship. This was a major logistical feat and at the same time one of the greatest advantages. The aromas of the grill spread across the deck during the voyage, creating an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere. Although the menu was not extensive, it focused on quality and freshness.
- Seafood: The seafood dishes received the most praise. Grilled calamari and fresh fish such as sea bass stood out. Guests often emphasized that the food was delicious and perfectly prepared.
- Meat options: For those who are not fans of seafood, there was always a meat alternative available, ensuring there was something for everyone.
- Service: Lunch or dinner was usually served towards the end of the cruise, allowing guests to enjoy the sights and experiences first. Drinks could be ordered at any time during the journey. Prices were considered reasonable in the past, making the whole experience even more affordable.
An Unforgettable Experience on the Slovenian Coast
More than just a meal, the cruise on the Ladja Laha was a real experience. The boat trip offered a unique perspective on the Slovenian coast , which looks completely different from the sea. The highlight of every trip was the almost guaranteed opportunity to spot dolphins. When these beautiful animals appeared in the Bay of Piran, the crew slowed the ship down and allowed passengers to observe and photograph them in peace. It was a moment that remained in the lasting memory of many and was often mentioned as the main reason for returning.
Heritage: The Good and Bad Sides of the Experience
Looking back on the operation of the Ladja Laho, we can objectively assess its strengths and some aspects that required consideration.
What was exceptional?
- Uniqueness: The combination of the restaurant and panoramic tour was unmatched by other providers.
- Nature experience: The opportunity to observe dolphins in their natural environment was priceless.
- Food quality: The emphasis on freshly prepared seafood on board was a big plus.
- Friendliness of the staff: The warm and professional attitude of the crew created a homely atmosphere.
- Versatility: Suitable for a variety of occasions, from family lunches to large private parties.
What was to be leased?
- Weather Dependence: As with any activity at sea, the implementation of the trip was dependent on weather conditions.
- Reservation required: Due to the popularity and fixed sailing schedule, advance reservations were necessary; spontaneous visits were not possible.
- Time commitment: The trip took several hours, so it wasn't suitable for those looking for a quick lunch.
- Limited menu selection: The offering was focused on a few proven dishes, which meant less choice than in a classic restaurant.
The passing of the Laho left a void on the Slovenian coast. She was more than just a business; she was a floating monument, a part of local identity and the scene of countless happy moments. Her story is a reminder of the transience, but also of the beauty of experiences that enrich life. Although her engines no longer hum, the memory of fresh fish , salty air and dolphins dancing on the waves will long live among all who had the opportunity to be a part of her story.
