Restaurant Mangrt
BackIn the Alpine village of Log pod Mangartom, in a house dating back to 1828 that once served as a popular village inn, today operates the Mangrt Restaurant. This is not an ordinary inn , but a culinary destination, led by chef Tomaž Sovdat and pastry chef Yuki Nakao since 2019. Their journey together, which began while working at the world-famous Hiša Franko by Ana Roš, continued at the Dobra Vila Hotel in Bovec and finally led them to their own story, with which they put Bovec and the surrounding area on the Slovenian culinary map.
Culinary philosophy: Local and seasonal
The central theme of the cuisine at Mangrt Restaurant is a close connection with the environment. The emphasis is on local ingredients and seasonal foods, which means that the menu changes several times a year. Chef Tomaž Sovdat proudly highlights the collaboration with local producers, from whom he obtains exceptional cheeses, trout, lamb and game. The restaurant does not offer a la carte dishes, but operates on the principle of pre-composed tasting menus . Guests can choose between a 4-course and a 6-course menu, which allows for an in-depth experience of the flavors that the Soča Valley has to offer. This approach allows them to prepare each plate with the utmost care and creativity.
Guest Experience: Between Enthusiasm and High Expectations
Guest reviews are mostly extremely positive, as confirmed by the high average rating. Many describe the food as "heavenly" and "superb", and the ambiance as pleasant and homely, despite the sophisticated service. Visitors praise the creativity that is reflected on the plates, and the overall gourmet experience . The experience of a couple who discovered the restaurant by chance and were completely delighted with the food, atmosphere and approach of the staff is particularly highlighted. Others took the opportunity to celebrate special occasions, such as a birthday, and praised the attentiveness of the staff, which made the evening unforgettable. The house cocktail with wormwood also left a great impression on the guests.
A View from the Other Side: Critical Assessment
Despite the general enthusiasm, there are also more critical opinions, which are equally important for potential guests. One of the visitors expressed that he perhaps had too high expectations, which were not fully met. His main comment concerned the ratio between the price (more than 70 euros for the menu) and the size of the portions, which he found too small. This is important information for those who expect larger meals; Restaurant Mangrt clearly focuses on a sophisticated, but not necessarily filling, experience .
Specific criticisms were levelled at individual dishes. The tartare was said to have too little meat and its flavour was completely overshadowed by the beetroot, suggesting a possible imbalance of flavours. Similarly, the sauce in the duck dish was said to be too sweet. On the other hand, the same guest highly praised the tongue and chanterelle dish, describing it as perfect and balanced. An interesting observation is also made about the service; the waiter seemed to act as if he had the text memorized and was embarrassed by further questions. This is in contrast to most other reviews, which praise the friendly and attentive staff, suggesting that experiences can vary.
What to expect during your visit?
Restaurant Mangrt is a place for those looking for top-notch cuisine in the heart of nature. The ambiance in an old, but renovated house offers a sense of homeliness and intimacy. The menu is full of bold combinations, such as chamois brains on zucchini flowers or soup made from three local cheeses with chanterelles.

Final assessment and recommendations
Restaurant Mangrt is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in Bovec and the surrounding area. It is an ideal choice for special occasions and for anyone who appreciates creative, signature cuisine based on top-quality local ingredients. Potential guests should be aware that this is a fine dining experience, which includes a higher price range and smaller, artistically perfected portions. Given the limited schedule and popularity, table reservations are essential. Although it may happen that a dish does not suit every taste or that the service experience is not always perfect, the vast majority of guests leave enthusiastic and with unforgettable memories of their culinary journey under the mighty Mangart.
